Modern vehicles can have excellent security, but criminals may target the signal transmitted by keyless vehicle fobs. Keyless or “relay” theft involves equipment being used to make a vehicle believe its key is nearby, allowing the vehicle to be unlocked and potentially started. You can reduce the risk: 🔑 Keep your main and spare keys well away from your vehicle when at home. 🔑 Avoid leaving keys near the front door, windows or letterbox. 🔑 Store keyless fobs in a signal-blocking pouch or container and regularly check that it continues to block the signal. 🔑 Check whether your vehicle allows the wireless signal from the fob to be switched off when it is not being used. 🔑 If you purchase a second-hand vehicle, consider having its keys reprogrammed. 🔒 Add another layer of security. A highly visible steering-wheel lock or other security-rated physical device can make your vehicle considerably less attractive to a thief. Finally, don’t simply press the lock button and walk away – check that your vehicle has actually locked.
